Why Trancoso in September
Founded by Jesuit missions in the 16th century, discovered by hippies in the 70s and later adopted by fashion, art and Brazil's great families, Trancoso has achieved what almost no one else has: becoming the country's most sophisticated beach destination without losing its village soul. Everything revolves around the Quadrado, a grassy square with the white church at the far end, colourful houses turned restaurants and shops, and kids playing football at dusk. Down the cliff, kilometres of almost empty beach. September is an excellent month: the end of the Bahian winter brings 28 °C, warm seas and little rain, long before the high season of December and January. And with its own airport for private jets and daily flights to Porto Seguro an hour away, logistics are simple.
Taivas Tip
Trancoso is Brazil's best-solved "do nothing" destination, so give it at least four nights. Choose between a house-hotel right on the Quadrado (to live the village) or a resort at the foot of the beach (for families with small children). The plans worth organising: a day in Caraíva, the car-free village that is what Trancoso was thirty years ago; the beach trek from Caraíva to Espelho; a horseback ride between forest and sea; and capoeira, surf or paddle for the little ones first thing in the morning.
