Why São Paulo in September
Most travellers see it as a mandatory stop on the way to Rio or the coast. That's a mistake. São Paulo is the cultural and culinary capital of South America: the continent's best art museum (MASP, with its floating collection above Avenida Paulista), the hemisphere's most ambitious restaurant scene, neighbourhoods with personality of their own like Jardins, Vila Madalena or Pinheiros, and modernist architecture that fascinates anyone who travels with open eyes. September is its best month: the end of winter, clear skies, 24 °C days and a cultural agenda in full swing. For a family arriving from Madrid, it is also the natural gateway to the country: the direct flight lands here, and two nights at the start of the trip let you settle in without rushing before flying on to Rio, Iguazú or the Northeast.

Location is everything in São Paulo. Jardins or Itaim put the best restaurants, Ibirapuera Park and the shops of Rua Oscar Freire within walking distance. With kids, plan a morning at Ibirapuera (Afro Brasil Museum, planetarium, bikes) and an afternoon at the Mercado Municipal for its famous mortadella sandwich. On Sundays Avenida Paulista closes to traffic and becomes the city's finest promenade.
