Oktoberfest Munich — 191st Edition
The world's largest folk festival, held annually on the Theresienwiese in Munich. 16 days of Bavarian beer, traditional food, fairground rides and authentic German Gemütlichkeit.
The 191st Munich Oktoberfest runs 19 September – 4 October 2026 on the Theresienwiese — a vast meadow in the heart of Munich that is transformed each year into the world's most famous festival.
Oktoberfest attracts over six million visitors annually, yet retains its authentic Bavarian character: lederhosen, dirndl, brass bands, and the ceremonial tapping of the first keg by the Mayor of Munich at noon on opening day. The great beer tents — Hofbräuzelt, Augustiner, Löwenbräu, Schottenhammer — each have their own character and loyal following.
For the luxury traveller, Oktoberfest is best experienced with reserved tables in the finest tents (bookable months in advance), stays at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof or Mandarin Oriental Munich, and time to explore Munich's extraordinary art museums — the Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, and Pinakothek der Moderne — around the festival.
Why It's Worth the Journey
Oktoberfest is one of the world's most joyful events — an authentic cultural celebration that somehow transcends its own mythology. Munich in late September is beautiful, and the combination of Bavaria's magnificent food culture with the festival's extraordinary atmosphere is genuinely unique.
